Vishwamitra, a King turned Rishi, austere penance for many years on Lord Brahma, to attain the highest status of sages called “Brahma Rishi” from him. Lord Indra in order to prevent his penance sent the Heavenly danseuse Menaka to seduce him. She in disguise, lured him with all her charms and the baby Shakuntala was born. When Indra wanted to take back Maneka to his abode Idralok, Vishvamitra having come to know about the treacherous act of Maneka and Indra, refused to accept the newborn baby and left them to continue his penance.
