Damyanti was the daughter of Bhim, the king of Vidharbh. She fell passionately in love with Nal the King of Nishad; who was son of Virsen, after coming to know about his personality, valour and noble qualities. Nal also heard of Damyanti’s captivating beauty and wanted to marry her. A beautiful swan with golden plumage, which could also speak, was sent by Nal to Damyanti, as messanger between them to develop their love.
Damayanti and swan are engaged in conversation; at the backdrop is a beautifully built huge pillar of the palace. The swan is seated on a carved, marble pedestal with lotus leaves handing. Ravi Varma portrayed Damyanti as an extraordinarily beautiful and elegant lady. The original painting is acclaimed as Ravi Varma’s Masterpiece.
